The history and evolution of engagement rings
When you think of an engagement ring, sparkling, crystal-clear diamonds may seem like an eternal symbol of love. Although diamonds have been a signifier of marital commitment for some centuries, engagement and wedding rings have an even longer history. Here’s a fascinating overview of the ways engagement rings have evolved through the ages.
Ancient Rome
In Ancient Rome, wives wore rings made of ivory, flint, bone, copper or iron. These “engagement” rings weren’t the symbols of love and devotion you know today. Rather, they were intended to signify that the wearer was “owned” by her husband.
14th century
In 1477, the very first diamond engagement ring was commissioned by Archduke Maximilian of Austria for his bride, Mary of Burgundy. The ring was made of gold and set with diamonds forming the letter M. This personalized design set the standard for engagement rings and continues to inspire jewellery designs in our modern age.
Renaissance
From the 14th to the 17th century, engagement rings continued to play a valued role in marriage. However, diamonds were rare, so only wealthy families and royals could afford diamond engagement rings. Instead, lovers favoured embellished metal bands or rings adorned with rubies, emeralds, sapphires and pearls.
Victorian era
In the 1860s, miners discovered diamonds in South Africa and soon began selling millions every year. The increased availability of the once-exclusive gem made diamond engagement rings more accessible. The cachet of exclusivity made diamonds the ultimate expression of love for people in less-wealthy classes.
World War I
Some 50 years later, at the onset of World War I, many people moved away from purchasing diamond engagement rings. To reduce their costs, young couples opted instead for simple gold or silver wedding bands or modest gemstone-adorned jewellery.
Mid-20th century
In 1947, De Beers, one of the world’s leading diamond companies, noticed that jewellery wasn’t selling as well as it once had, and the diamond market was about to collapse. With the help of Hollywood stars and the slogan, “A diamond is forever”, they brought diamond engagement rings back into the spotlight.
Modern day
Today, diamond engagement rings remain the standard for couples who want to demonstrate their intentions to get married. Contemporary brides are seeking conscientiously sourced diamonds or opting for rings with coloured gemstones and those made of unique materials.
